Security for Social Networking and Safe Brand Promotion
There are many reasons advertising companies make a lot of money. These include businesses getting their names known to the right people who will generate income, directly or otherwise. However, analytics and smart marketing practices are only a fraction of the equation for success. The key is in managing a reputation once it’s already out there. So many companies have started out with a bang, and failed due to mudslinging, politics, associations, and other harmful observations which could have been prevented if more care was taken to maintain and warn of reputation ‘issues.’
Issues:
- harmful consumer commentary online
- lack of consumer knowledge of brand
- politically charged press due to company figure association
- lack of flexibility/change or product improvement
- lack of continued marketing development in a changing world
- other influences reported and logged online
The question… how can you completely protect something on the massive and tangled ocean that is the Internet? The point is not to become immune to any negative feedback, but to treat it as a metric with which to respond in a manner which reflects intelligently, and positively on the company. Just as well, if someone lights a fire against the company in an all-out attempt at damaging their reputation, early detection is key to responding appropriately.
Remedies:
- Monitor and understand what consumers are saying about brands to leverage insights for strategic planning and market research
- Identify emerging topics and hot issues that require immediate response
- Identify opinion leaders and social influencers for marketing outreach; then gauge effectiveness of marketing programs in reaching and influencing key target audiences
- Understand the conversation around competitors’ products and services
- Develop better products and services based on unbiased consumer feedback
- Continued development of metrics and market detection/defense
So managing a brand, company, and/or personal reputation online is no easy task, but there are some great tools out there which do the math for you. From statistics on site traffic, to metrics on the success of competitor strategies, and market saturation data, most of the world business leaders are saying , “I’ve got an app for that.” Literally or not, looking into the apps and services available may help even the smallest venture succeed.
